I took this photo one night in Chinatown in Honolulu in the 1980's, as families gathered to celebrate the arrival of the new year. I was drawn to the warm light on the child's face with her mother's protective presence reflected in the window, along with the subdued light on her grandmother. All together the scene seemed to express something about the bond of families, of hope and new beginnings, and the passing of generations.
