The Air Force decided I was more suited for photography than aircraft maintenance. Trained as a Still Photo Lab Specialist, we were cross-trained with Speed Graphic 4x5's. First duty station was Tan Son Nhut Airfield on the northern outskirts of Saigon, 1969, working in portable Photo Processing and Interpretation Facilities (PPIF) for aerial reconnaissance Squadrons. My first camera was a Yashica 35mm rangefinder. I bought a Mamiya Sekor 1000dtl from a fellow airman that I used for years before finally buying a second-hand Pentax Spotmatic that I'd long craved. The arrival of digital pretty well took the steam out of it all for me. Too easy, too quick, no mystery. I'm so glad to see a new generation is discovering the magic of film photography at last. Maybe they'll start reading books next!
