I was still in the Air Force, I was just back from Vietnam, stationed at a training base in Mississippi. On weekends I'd grab my camera and a few bucks and hop the train to New Orleans. I spent the time roaming the French Quarter, eating gumbo, listening to jazz, watching people and enjoying the freedom to wander. This was during Mardi Gras. I remember arguing with a war protestor, a white-haired woman handing out leaflets against the war. After a while, we stopped to catch our breath. Then she advised me "read, just read." I did, reading Fire in the Lake, The Quiet American, and other perspectives. Strange times, I remember.
