Nikon FE

What a Nikon FE actually produces — 14 photographs shot on one by members here.

The Nikon FE is the automatic sibling of the Nikon FM. It was introduced in 1978 with the same compact, all-metal body, but adds aperture-priority automatic exposure. You set the aperture, and the camera picks the shutter speed — anything from 8 sec to 1/1000, set steplessly in auto.

The shutter is electronically controlled, so the camera needs its batteries. Two small cells in the base keep it going for a long time, and without them it still fires mechanically at 1/90 sec and on B. That is a usable fallback, not a second camera, so carry spares.

The meter is center-weighted and shown as a pair of needles in the finder: one for the speed the camera has chosen and one for the speed you have dialed. That display makes it easy to switch to manual and keep the camera's suggestion in view. Focusing screens are user-interchangeable.

It takes AI and AI-S Nikkor lenses, which are plentiful and still sensibly priced. The FE2 that followed added faster speeds and flash sync, but for most people the FE does everything they will ask of it. Loaded with Portra 400, it is one of the easiest Nikons to recommend.
