Nikon F2

What a Nikon F2 actually produces — 12 photographs shot on one by members here.

The Nikon F2 is Nikon's fully mechanical professional SLR, made from 1971 to 1980. Everything that matters works without a battery: the shutter runs from 1 sec to 1/2000, plus B and T. Batteries power only the meter in the finder.

The F2 is a system camera, and the finder defines the model. With the plain DE-1 prism there is no meter at all. The Photomic finders — DP-1, then DP-2 (F2S), DP-3 (F2SB), DP-11 (F2A) and DP-12 (F2AS) — add metering, and Nikon named the whole camera after the finder fitted. When you see a listing for an F2, look at the finder to know which one it is.

Focusing screens are interchangeable too, and the camera accepts a motor drive that was fast for its time. Pre-AI lenses mount directly. AI lenses fit as well, and the later DP-11 and DP-12 finders couple to them without any indexing.

F2 bodies were built to be used hard and repaired, and specialist technicians still service them. A well-kept example will outlast its owner. Loaded with Tri-X 400, it is the camera behind a large share of 1970s photojournalism.
