Nikon F2A

What a Nikon F2A actually produces — 10 photographs shot on one by members here.

The Nikon F2A is a Nikon F2 fitted with the DP-11 Photomic A finder, introduced in 1977 to bring the F2 into the AI era. AI lenses couple to the meter automatically when mounted, so there is no need to index the aperture each time you change a lens.

Underneath the finder it is the same mechanical camera as every F2. The shutter runs from 1 sec to 1/2000 with no help from the battery, which powers only the meter. Readings are center-weighted and shown as a match needle in the finder, with the shutter speed and aperture visible alongside.

Because the F2 is named after its finder, it's worth checking that an "F2A" actually has a DP-11 on top. The prisms swap freely, and an F2A body can turn up with the earlier Photomic finders or a plain DE-1. The later F2AS uses the DP-12 finder, with LED readouts in place of the needle.

Pre-AI lenses can still be used, but they meter stopped down with the DP-11. With AI and AI-S Nikkors it is about as comfortable as a mechanical Nikon gets. Load it with Tri-X 400 and it will keep working for decades.
