I was sitting in the sand by the Royal Hawaiian Hotel at Waikiki, peacefully watching the sun set, when they arrived and waded out into the water. I was struck by the gracefulness of the young woman, and her tenderness and protectiveness as she held her grandmother's hand, slowly guided her out into the water.
