South Seas

I'd dreamed to traveling to Tahiti since I was a kid. Finally, the opportunity arose in my 40's. In company with archaeologists from Bishop Museum in Honolulu where I'd been volunteering, I joined a voyage lead by famed archaeologist Dr. Yosihiko Sinoto, aboard the wonderful, rusty old interisland freighter Aranui II. We departed Papeete late one night bound for the Marquesas. This photo was taken the next morning as we were approaching the atolls of the Tuamotus that we passed through enroute to the Marquesas. Three weeks later, after visiting each island of the Marquesas group, we returned to Papeete, having had the journey of my dreams.
