Kentmere Pan 400 is a budget black-and-white film made by Harman Technology, the company behind Ilford, and one of the least expensive ways to shoot 400-speed black-and-white today. That makes it a favorite for learning, for bulk loading, and for anyone developing at home who wants to shoot a lot without counting the cost.

It has a classic look with noticeable grain and moderate contrast — grainier and a little less refined than HP5, but very usable — and it takes a push to 800 reasonably well. Results vary more with the developer than they do with the premium films, so it pays to settle on one and learn it. If you like Kentmere and want a step up, Ilford HP5 Plus is the natural next film; for something slower and finer, Kentmere Pan 100.
