Panoramic et al

I wonder if any thought has been put into the current displaying of submitted images outside of the "usually the subject is centered in the frame" that I assume is the main motivation behind having square (1:1) tiles?

I'm asking this because I've been holding off on submitting panoramic shots, mainly because in square format (of the tiles), one doesn't really get a good feel for the real (read: whole) image, and I don't know how often people actually click on an image to see it in full aspect ratio.

I wonder if something could be done to maybe address this, or even if it needs addressing (it may not). Could an indicator of the aspect ratio (or similar) be added to the tiles? I don't know if that seems like clutter or overkill, but I thought I'd bring it up for consideration.

I think it's a good idea. Any image with an aspect ratio of 2:1 or wider will now get a "Panorama" label, enticing users to click through. Give it a try!

Yep, your "Panorama" label worked. Nice! Thanks!

I came across a thing that seems to contradict what you said about the 2:1 ratio.... I just uploaded what I am sure would be a "panoramic" shot that did not get the "Panorama" label applied.

The details involded, which probably are playing a role in the matter, are this. I uploaded a "roll" of film (only 3 shots, but I used the roll upload feature), and in that upload form, it asks you to specify the film format. In that field, I chose 6x4.5 (since that is what the camera format was, and there was no other option that included "panoramic" in the description), which is accurate to a degree. The camera (a Zenza Bronica ETRS) is a 645 camera, but I had cropped the image in question to a 2:1 ratio, since that is how I had envisioned it when framing the shot. So it is a panoramic (2:1 ratio), but it was shot on a 645.

You said that images with a ration of 2:1 would automatically be tagged as "panoramic", so I assumed that would be applied to the above image, but it wasn't. Maybe you were just using shorthand with your description of the new feature? Or is something broken? Or is the fact that I assigned it the 6x4.5 format overriding? Dunno, just thought I'd bring it up, since it doesn't quite match what you described would happen.

Should be working now. There was a rounding issue in the code during scaling, causing your image aspect ratio to be 1.999:1 after downsizing. Only would happen when images were exactly 2:1. Which included your image. Thanks, Jim!
