Newton Rings

I can't seem to get rid of these newton rings. I'm trying not to use scanning fluid because I don't want to breath in the fumes. I get a headache from it. I'm using an expensive piece of anti-newton ring glass to hold the negative down but it doesn't seem to be helping. The negative won't lay flat enough without the piece of glass holding it down. I'm thinking of holding it down from the edges, maybe just taping it to the glass. It would be nice if there was a holder. I'm using the Epson V850 and find the holders that come with it to be very inadequate.

It's the rainbow pattern, mostly top right. Looks a bit like an oil slick.

Have you tried using the Digitaliza film holders? I don't know how you scan, but those are pretty good (not perfect, but pretty good) at flattening out negatives without using glass.

Regarding fumes and liquids. What fumes are you not liking? You can use different liquids to help with the curling and newton rings.

Lastly, it sounds like you are sandwiching you negatives between two pieces of glass. If you are, are both pieces of glass textured and is the textured side the side touching the film (on both pieces)? Confirm that. That might be the issue.

I haven't used the Digitaliza holders yet, but I'll order one and give it a try. Good idea! For fluid I've been using the Kami SMF2001 Scanner Mounting Fluid, but the fumes are rough. Maybe I'm just sensitive to them. I end up loopy after a few scans. I scan with the Epson V850 and I've been using the fluid mount, without the fluid, and piece of textured anti-newton ring glass to hold the negative flat. I think the rings are coming from the glass of the fluid mount since its not frosted and meant to be used with fluid.

Let me know if you have trouble finding the Digitaliza. I have one I don't use anymore that I could probably pass on, if interested, but I'm sure there are plenty available. I haven't looked in a while.
