SITE: "Photographs with the Most Likes" logic

Pardon the category, but there isn't one for the filmphotography.com site, or anything remotely close, so I chose "Development"

I would like to hear something about how the programmatic logic is defined for the "most likes" section of the homepage. (Or any of the sections on the homepage that feature images, and has background reload/refresh functionality). I regularly see lots of photos (some seems more often shown that others) with less likes than some of mine, and it's made me curious to learn more about the backend logic that gets applied.

That's a good question, and it's something we can definitely change. When I built the "Most Likes" section I had the thought that top 6 photographs would eventually become static and never change. To keep a bit of rotation, I decided I would query the top 20 liked photographs, and then rotate them in the 6 spots.

The "Most Recent" section is just that, the 12 most recent photographs. The "selection from the gallery" is a random pull from all photographs on the website.

I'm ok with going back to static for the "Most Likes" section. We'll see how it goes. I'll also make a section for site updates. Thanks for your input! This is the kind of stuff that will make a great community.

Another option, if you want to keep a little bit of the "rotation" aspect, would be to lessen the pool somewhat. Maybe 12 rather than 20 (as an example). That would keep it somewhat dynamic, while still being a little more accurate regarding the section title.

And another way to tackle it might be to register when an image from the pool has been shown, and then restrict it until the other images from the pool have also been shown. This would act as a sort of balancer (because "random" is never literally random, it usually needs a little help to be more balanced-random).

Another thing I would consider it placing the "most favorited" section (04) immediately below the "editor's pic" section (02). Then following with the general library section (i forget how you have that one labeled) :D
