There's a new button on every member's profile: Follow.
Click it and you'll get one email a day listing everything that photographer has had published since the last one. Not one email per photo — one email, covering everyone you follow. If somebody sits down and uploads twenty frames from a weekend, that's still one email.
How to use it
Open any photographer's profile — click their name under a photo in the gallery, or find them from a photo page. The Follow button sits under their gear list. Click it once and you're following.
To see everyone you follow, go to your account menu → Following. You can unfollow anyone from there, and set how often you hear from us. The two choices are a daily recap or nothing at all.
There's no instant option, and that's deliberate. Photographers tend to post in batches, and an instant setting would have meant twenty emails from one upload session. A recap that arrives in the evening seemed better than that.
What you'll see
Your profile now shows how many people follow you. It doesn't show who they are, and nobody can see who you follow — that list is yours alone.
Following someone doesn't mail you their back catalog, either. You'll hear about what they post from the moment you follow, and nothing before it.
Turning it off
Every email has a link at the bottom that takes you to your notification settings, no login needed. Comment notifications and follow notifications are separate switches, so you can keep one and drop the other.
Also this month
This page. Site news now lives at Updates instead of being mixed in with the articles. Articles are for guides and stories worth reading in a year. This is for what changed last week. You can comment on updates — if something's broken or you've got a question, say so and I'll see it.
The gallery. Photographs now record when they were published, not just when they were uploaded, which is what makes the follow recap send things in the right order even when I'm slow to get through the moderation queue.
Small fixes. The portrait on the front page links to my profile now. A couple of buttons had unreadable text on hover.
What's next
I'm thinking about photo challenges — a theme, a few weeks, a page collecting what people shot. And possibly an outing or two for anyone near Worcester. Both of those would get announced here.
